Don Jones Custom Rods

Quality Built Rods

 Blanks and Components

I can build you a rod for any bass application you require. I have also built ultralight rods for trout/pan fish as well as heavy rods used in saltwater. I primarily build on GLoomis, St Croix, Seeker, Shikari, and Batson Rainshadow Blanks. Other manufactures are available if you prefer.

I use mainly Fuji Guides. I prefer Alconites as they are a step above Hardloy. You may also choose Titanium SIC guides as well. REC recoil guides are another option. I prefer to use Fuji single foot guides for most applications. They are lighter which makes the rod more sensitive, they also have a shorter eye to leg distance which makes them stronger as well.

Reel seats are produced by several manufactures as well. I mainly use Fuji graphite reels seats. I have used Batson Textured seats which are also good and offer a different feel.

I generally use cork for all handle construction. The quality of cork does vary and I try to use the best cork available. Most, if not all, manufactured rods use pitted cork that has been filled. I do not like to fill cork if possible. I also use exotic cork as well as burl cork. Other handle materials used would be EVA and Hypalon.

Guide wraps are done with Gudebrod nylon thread. There are a vast number of colors available. They offer a metallic thread which is also available in many different colors. I do not get fancy with my guide wraps. I can add a trim band if preferred. Most of the rods I build are for bass fishermen who want a rod for performance, not for fancy looks. All single foot guides are done with the Forhan Locking Wrap. This locking wrap completely encircles the guide leg and guarantees the guide cannot be pulled from the wrap. You will not find this on to many manufactured rods, if at all.

Spiral Wrapped Guides: Main purpose is to move the line to the bottom of the blank. This prevents the blank from twisting, now you have a stable rod with no line chafe. This results in fewer broken rods especially when using some of the higher modulus blanks that are available.
